Over the past decade, metasurfaces have already made conventional optical components more compact and introduced new integrated functionalities, such as polarization-enabled holograms and spin-dependent optics. Their superior capability in introducing spin-orbit coupling and storing a vast array of engineering degrees of freedom enables their further application in the quantum optical regime. In this talk, we will investigate how metasurfaces can be useful in the quantum optical regime when new resources, such as entanglement and two-photon interference, become available. First, by using orthogonal linear-polarized photons, we will demonstrate the imaging of the Jones matrix profile—the polarization response function—for an unknown object using two-photon interference. The adoption of two-photon interference allows us to extract more information simultaneously compared to classical measurements. Second, we will also demonstrate how metasurfaces can be utilized to construct entangled photon states. We will showcase hybridized entangled states between polarization and vortex beams. Additionally, we will explore how metasurfaces can be employed to perform quantum operations and algorithms, such as Grover's search and the quantum Fourier transform.

Jensen Li is currently a professor in the Department of Physics at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research directions include optical metasurfaces, non-Hermitian systems, transformation optics and acoustic metamaterials. He has published more than one hundred peer-reviewed articles. His research group in Hong Kong and previously in UK has been supported by research grants from EU and Hong Kong RGC. He has led a collaborative research project on “Non-Hermitian Systems in Optics and Acoustics” across several local universities in Hong Kong. Jensen was elected Croucher Senior Research Fellow in 2022 and is an elected member of Hong Kong Young Academy of Sciences.
