题目:Quantum Dot Arrays: A Route to Scalable Quantum Optical Circuits

摘要:
Epitaxical semiconductor quantum dots, predominantly of the lattice mismatch strain-driven 3D coherent island genre, have provided a relatively easily accessed platform for exploration of many aspects of single photon generation, and their coupling to light manipulating elements (LMEs) such as resonant cavity and / or waveguide. The combined single quantum dot (SQD) - LME structures have been examined in both horizontal and vertical architecture: the former typically employs a judiciously selected island QD from a random spatial and spectral distribution around which 2D photonic crystal based LMEs are lithographically fabricated; the latter exploits vertical growth of nanowires / pillars, typically employing seeded vapor-liquid-solid growth in spatially ordered holes in a mask. While many proof-of-existence findings have been reported, neither approach has yet achieved sufficient control on spectral emission and three-dimensional positioning uniformity of the SQDs to realize network of interconnected units of combined SQD-LME structures at the core of quantum optical circuits.

Anupam Madhukar heads the Nanostructure Materials and Devices Laboratory (NMDL) at the University of Southern California (USC) and is internationally known for the spawning and development of the field of self-organized semiconductor nanostructures. He is the Kenneth T. Norris Professor of Engineering, holds appointments in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, and Physics, and is a member of the USC Center for Photonics and USC Center for Neural Engineering. He carries out multi-disciplinary research with a focus on examination of quantum phenomena in novel functional nanoscale structures synthesized for applications in: information sensing, processing and communication; conversion of solar photons to power; probing the biotic-abiotic interface; real-time imaging and simultaneous spectroscopic probing of multiple intra-cellular biochemical processes in large populations live cells under controlled applied stress, and quantum dots as single photon source in quantum optical circuits. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (Physics, 1977-79). He is the recipient of the Outstanding Research Achievement award (1988) of the USC School of Engineering and DARPA/MTO Award of Sustained Excellence (1997). Madhukar has served on a variety of national panels including the US National Nanotechnology Initiative DoD/NSF Panel on Nanoelectronics, Nanomagnetics, and Nanophotonics (2004), DoE National Solar Energy Workshop Panel (2005), and NSF adhoc Panel on Sustainability (2010)
