摘要:
Optical nano-resonators, such as dielectric nano-rods, nano-disks, and plasmonic nano-particles, can concentrate light to a small area. Such nanoscale concentration facilitates optical energy conversion and is frequently used in photovoltaic cells, solar fuel generation, molecular imaging, and photodetectors. In this talk, we will explore the limit of light concentration and discuss some unique applications in optoelectronics.
Specifically, the resonant cross section limits the amount of light that can be concentrated from the free space to a confined target. It sets the upper bound of the total photon budget that ultimately limits many optical devices’ performance. I will discuss the general limit of the resonant cross section in free space and structured optical meida. In particular, novel optical materials such as index-near-zero materials and photonic crystals with Wely points, present new opportunities to obtain extremely large cross sections, potentially making nanoscale objects visible to naked eyes. I will also discuss one application enabled by resonant interactions. It uses optically-coupled but electrically-isolated photo-detector for light-field sensing. Toward the end, I will provide some outlook on using resonant electronic transitions to construct extremely compact optical devices.

Zongfu Yu is an assistant professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. His research focuses on photonics and its applications in energy conversion, imaging, and sensing. He is a recipient of Stanford Postdoc Research Award, the Dugold Jackson Faculty Scholar Award. He has authored and co-authored over 90 peer-reviewed papers with a total citation over 9000. He received his Ph.D. in applied physics and M.S. in management science and engineering, both from Stanford University. He received B.S. from the University of Science and Technology of China.
