题目:Technology development in laser interferometers for gravitational wave detection
报告人:Dr. Zhao Chunnong赵春农(University of Western Australia)
摘要:
Gravitational waves are tiny ripples in space and time caused by large scale events such as explosions of stars or compact binary coalesce. They were predicted 100 years ago by Einstein’s theory of general relativity. The first direct detection of gravitational waves opens a new window for us to explore the universe and marks a new era of gravitational wave astronomy.
The technology used for the first detection of gravitational waves is based on Michelson interferometers, but with multiple coupled optical cavities in arms, and in input and output ports. High power lasers, vibration isolators, and ultra-low optical and mechanical loss mirrors are used for reaching the quantum noise limited sensitivity. In this talk I will describe the principle of laser interferometers for gravitational wave detection, the technology used for reaching the current sensitivity, and the technology in development for future detectors.
简介:
Dr. Zhao Chunnong obtained his PhD from the University of Western Australia in 1999, and then did postdoctoral research in the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics for a year. After that he returned to work on the Western Australia Gingin high optical power facility to develop technologies for next generation gravitational wave detectors. He is a member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration. His direct contribution to the first detection of gravitational waves by LIGO was his research on the parametric instability and its control.
