We have implemented single-atom imaging with unprecedented resolution using phase Fresnel lenses. This scalable imaging solution will enable parallel quantum repeaters based on ion-photon entanglement in spontaneous emission. Using this technology, we have performed absorption imaging of a single atomic ion for the first time. When the beam is reimaged onto a CCD camera, we observe an absorption image of 440 nm diameter and up to 5.6% contrast. The absorption contrast is investigated as a function of laser intensity and detuning, and closely conforms to the limits imposed by simple quantum theory and known properties of our imaging system. Defocused absorption images provide spatial interferograms of the scattered light, permitting accurate retrieval of the amplitude and phase of the scattered wave. We measure a phase shift of >1 radian in the scattered light as a function of laser detuning, with applications in quantum information protocols. We are now constructing a highly parallel on-chip imaging system for large arrays of trapped ions, enabling high-bandwidth transmission of quantum entanglement.

Dave Kielpinski is a professor at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, where he leads research groups in trapped-ion quantum computing and in attosecond science. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Chicago. His PhD work was performed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in the group of Dr. David Wineland (Nobel 2012), where he helped to build the first trapped-ion quantum information processor. He performed postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Pappalardo Fellow, working on Bose-Einstein condensates in the group of Prof. Wolfgang Ketterle (Nobel 2001) and ultrafast laser technology with Prof Franz Kaertner. His current research focuses on quantum communication using ions and on precision measurement of atomic hydrogen in strong laser fields.
