题目:Break up an atom or break down the vacuum with laser forces ?

报告人:Prof. Q. Charles Su(Illinois State University in the US)

Abstract
Dr. Su’s early work focused on what happens when atoms are bombarded with intense laser light, suggesting a surprising region of atomic stability at high laser intensities. His research team at Illinois State discovered cycloatoms, a new form of atom in which a laser is used to excite atomic electrons to produce a ring-shaped cloud in which electrons move at nearly the speed of light and have a very large spatial extent. His research group has expanded into the fundamental quantum physics of particle-antiparticle creation from the vacuum. With a space-time based computational approach, they contributed to the resolution of the Klein paradox and the understanding of the origin of the force between fermions. They have begun theoretical and experimental studies of laser scattering in biological materials, a project that has potential applications in non-invasive medical imaging of tumors and other internal body structures.
In this presentation, Dr. Su will start with a brief review of some concepts in intense laser-atom interaction before presenting more recent numerical modeling of supercritical laser-vacuum interaction. With increasing laser intensity, laser-atom interaction can be described by processes such as multi-photon ionization, above threshold ionization, high-order harmonic generation and atomic stabilization. With supercritical laser fields, one can demonstrate numerically the possibility of breaking down the vacuum to create particle pairs in model systems. The talk will end with numerical experiments of particle interference with a model Yukawa interaction.

Prof. Daniel R. Grischkowsky简介:
Dr. Q. Charles Su is the University Professor at Illinois State University in the US who is visiting the Institute of Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has conducted research at the University of Rochester and the Max-Planck-Institute for Quantum Optics in Germany. He is a computational and theoretical physicist specializing in the area of laser-atom interactions. As the co-director of the Intense Laser Physics research group at Illinois State, Dr. Su has obtained external funding from the US National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, Research Corporation, and the Chinese NSFC totaling over one and half million dollars. He shared the 2006 Prize for Faculty Research in an Undergraduate Institution given by the American Physics Society.
Prof. Su has published more than 125 refereed articles with many in Physical Review (8 in Phys. Rev. Lett.). His work has had over 2,000 citations including publications with citation frequency between 100 and 300. Dr. Su has also been invited to present at international conferences and research institutes in 16 countries. His research work has been featured in the press, TV and radio. Dr. Su referees for eight major journals and three funding agencies.
