题目:Scaling of High Order Harmonic Generation with Wavelength and Laser Technology

摘要:
In recent years, laser technology has widened the field of light-matter interaction physics to those involving intense infrared light pulses lasting only a few periods of the electromagnetic wave oscillation. Development of this technology is highly motivated by the promise of generating high flux coherent extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) and soft-X-ray beams by means of high harmonic generation (HHG) in gases. Because of the inherently low conversion efficiency of the process, a new generation of infrared and visible laser sources is called for, with simultaneous high average power, high pulse energy, and few- to single-cycle pulse duration. Employing these high-average-power sources, we might be able to generate enough EUV photon flux to seed free electron lasers, perform water-window soft-X-ray imaging in the laser laboratory, and conduct a variety of attosecond spectroscopies.In this talk, I will discuss emerging techniques in nonlinear optics used to generate such light pulses. In particular, I will discuss optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), which we have used to generate a 3-cycle, 10-Gigawatt peak power source at 2-micron wavelength, and which we are currently developing for the synthesis of a sub-cycle duration optical waveform with weakly focused beam intensity sufficient for isolated attosecond pulse generation in noble gases. In addition, I will discuss theoretical and experimental studies to understand the efficiency scaling of HHG.
 
Prof. Franz X. Kärtner 简介:
Professor Franz X. Kärtner is a principal investigator in the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He received his Diploma and Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Technische Universität München, Germany in 1986, and 1989, respectively. From 1989-1991 he carried out post doctoral research at Technische Universität München. In 1991, he was awarded a Feodor-Lynen Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to carry out research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1993 to 1997, he was a principal investigator at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, earning his Habilitation degree. After a visiting professorship in 1998 at Massachusetts Institute of Technology he joined Universität Karlsruhe (TH) as Professor of Electrical Engineering and held the Chair for Photonics and Terahertz Technology. In 2001 he returned to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he is full professor since 2005. He served as Program and General Co-Chair for the LEOS Annual Meetings 2002 and 2004, the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics 2007 and 2009, and he is currently Chair of the Ultrafast Optical Phenomena Technical Group of OSA 2008-2010 and Commission D, Electronics and Photonics, of the International Union of Radio Scientists (URSI) 2008-2011. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
