题目:The unique role of atomic many-body theory in fundamental physics

摘要:
Atomic theory has made monumental contributions to the fundamental physics during the last century. Starting with Bohr's theory of the hydrogen atom which was an important step in the birth of quantum mechanics to the development of many-body theory of atoms in the 1960s, atomic theory has left its imprint in many important areas of physics. The decade of the 1970s witnessed the emergence of the relativistic many-body theory of atoms. It was the fusion of the two of the greatest theories of modern physics--special theory of relativity and quantum mechanics in the context of atoms. This theory blossomed in the subsequent two decades and now it is very clear that it has a wide range of applications.  The focus of my talk will be on two remarkable applications of atomic many-body theory in the area of discrete symmetry violations. I shall emphasize the necessity of high precision relativistic many-body calculations on heavy atoms not just for parity violating transition amplitudes and electric dipole moments, but also associated quantities like excitation energies, magnetic hyperfine constants, allowed transition amplitudes and polarizabilities. The role of atomic many-body theory in extracting a variety of nuclear moments that are difficult to measure directly will be highlighted. Some important results obtained by this approach will be presented.

Dr. Bijaya Kumar Sahoo 简介:
Dr. Sahoo received his Ph. D in 2005 in Indian Institute of Astrophysics. He then worked as a Post-Doctoral fellow in Max-Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Germany from 2006 to 2008. Now he is the project leader of project "Atomic parity violation as a high-precision test of the unified electroweak theory" at Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) in Netherlands. His research interests include (1) Theory of atomic electric dipole moments (EDMs) arising from parity and time-reversal/CP violation and its role in testing the Standard Model of Particle Physics; (2) Parity non-conservation (PNC) in atomic systems to probe the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics using the relativistic many-body theory; (3)  Search for new candidates for atomic clocks; (4) Studies of quantum phase transitions in cold atoms and breached-pair phase in the BEC-BCS crossover, etc. He has published over 50 refereed journal articles, and has given over 20 invited talks. He got "The Best Thesis Award" for the year 2006 on his PhD thesis by the Indian Association of Atomic and Molecular Physics and "NWO-VENI fellowship" from NWO(N) in Netherlands for 2009-2012.
