题目:From Photonic Crystals to Metamaterials: A General Mean-Field Theory
报告人:Prof. Peter Halevi(Instituto Nacional de Astrofisica, Opticay Electronica, Puebla, Mexico)
摘要:
Photonic crystals and photonic metamaterials are, essentially, "two sides of the same coin": small scale or "micro" description versus large-scale or "macro" description. Following an introduction to the exotic optical properties of metamaterials, I will show how a novel mean-field theory leads from Maxwell's Equations at the micro-level to Maxwell's Equations at the macro-level. Because the assumed unit cell of the photonic crystal is very general, the constitutive equations that relate the D and B vectors to the E and H vectors also turns out to be of great generality, namely, the so-called "bi-anisotropic response". The coefficients in this response (such as the effective permittivity tensor") are completely determined in terms of the unit cell, and are, of course, independent of position. Applications of the theory to some simple systems will be presented.
